A NORTH-EAST teenager has died following an attack on the party island of Ibiza.
Police say Richard Caisley, 19, was punched several times before being struck on the head with a bottle.
The fight broke out in a bar at the resort of San Jose, on the island's west coast, on Tuesday evening.
Richard was taken to a first aid post and treated for a bleeding ear, and then released.
He returned to his holiday hotel, which he was sharing with three friends, but started to feel unwell.
His friends called an ambulance at 10am on Wednesday and he was rushed to hospital in a coma, and died early on Thursday.
Yesterday, his parents, Tom, a university laboratory technician, and Lyn, a doctor's receptionist, were in Ibiza.
Neighbours of the family, which also includes Richard's sister, Sarah, were stunned at news of the teenager's death.
Visiting the house in High Heaton, Newcastle, Brian Sykes, who plays in an Irish music band, Granny Smith's Maggot, with fiddle player Mr Caisley, said: "It is an awful shock.
"We were supposed to be playing a gig tonight but I got a text message from Tom in midweek to say Richard had been attacked and that it looked serious.
"I got another today to say that he had died.
"The Caisleys are a nice family and Richard's mam and dad were very proud of him. They will be devastated."
A neighbour said: "Richard was a really pleasant, quiet boy, who I think wanted to join the police force.
"He was not at all the sort to be in trouble and to hear he has died in an attack like this is really horrible."
Doctors later said that Richard had suffered a brain haemmorrhage, which was not detected when he was first treated on Tuesday evening.
Matthew Lee Conway and Jack Mickle, both 19 and from Nottingham, were arrested in connection with the incident.
