A teenager has died after being found hanging in his room at a County Durham secure training centre in the early hours of this morning.
The 14-year-old, who has not been named but comes from Burnley, in Lancashire, was discovered by staff shortly after midnight during a routine check at the Hassockfield Centre, at Medomsley, near Consett, County Durham.
Staff attempted to revive him and he was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, where he was confirmed dead.
Detectives launched an inquiry but, at this stage, they are not treating it as suspicious. A post mortem examination is due to be carried out this afternoon and the coroner has been informed.
The teenager had been remanded in custody on a charge of wounding. His mother was informed of the death in the early hours of the morning and is understood to have travelled to the North-East today.
