POLICE at Scarborough are stepping up their presence during the peak summer holiday weeks after dozens of arrests involving drunken gangs.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said a mobile cell truck had been drafted into the resort and would be posted in the town centre as a warning to potential troublemakers.

The vehicle has eight cells and will be used to take people arrested by police to stations at Northallerton and York when the Scarborough headquarters' cells are full. There have been 120 arrests in the past three weeks for anti-social behaviour. It is hoped the cell truck will free up smaller police vehicles for other calls.
