A THIRD central reservation gap at a notorious accident blackspot has been closed while work to improve the junction continues.
The gap east of the Aagrah Restaurant on the A64 at Bilbrough, near York, will remain closed until the spring, when the £11m project is expected to be completed.
Drivers have been using it as a short-cut rather than following the signed diversion routes around the Bilbrough Top/Colton Lane junction improvement works.
North Yorkshire Police said they have witnessed and had reports of drivers carrying out dangerous manoeuvres at the gap, with some near-misses reported.
Further central reservation gaps west of the Aagrah Restaurant and opposite Old Street junction had to be closed for similar reasons earlier this year.
Highways Agency spokeswoman Lynne Biddles said: "We realise that closing this latest gap will inconvenience some local residents, but on balance, we and the police feel the safety benefits outweigh any difficulties the closure will cause."
