PROPOSALS to redevelop the site of a filling station and garage in a village near Darlington have been criticised by local councillors.
Members of Middleton St George Parish Council decided to object to plans to build five town houses in the centre of the village.
Councillors agreed the three-storey development outlined for the Station Garage site, in Salisbury Place, was out of keeping with its surroundings.
Councillor Brian Jones said: "It is an over-development of a small site. It is three-storeys, which we have fought against in other developments."
The plan, submitted by Clarion Homes, has sparked protests from many residents living near the site.
Chairwoman of the village's community partnership, Margaret Clemence, is leading a campaign against the scheme, with letters of objection and a petition to Darlington Borough Council's planning department.
Parish councillors said at a meeting on Monday night that they wished to try to reach a compromise with the developer.
