CHILDREN learnt that diving like Superman from a blazing house was not recommended, when they visited Richmond fire station yesterday.
The young visitors from Richmondshire District Council's summer sports scheme looked around an engine, watched a chip-pan fire demonstration and were given advice from fire crews.
Children told firefighters the best way to escape a fire was to throw a mattress out of the window and then dive "like Superman". But they now know this is not a good idea.
Seven-year-old Andrew Davidson, of Richmond, said: "They told us to put the back of your hand against the door and if its cold go out and wake up your parents."
Leading firefighter Steve Harris said: "The day is about the children having fun and learning about fire safety.
"They also now know we are approachable."
