AN appeal to raise money to restore the bells of a village church near Darlington has been given a boost.
Charles Marshall, chairman of the Durham Freemasons' Benevolent Fund, presented a cheque for £750 to the Vicar of St Michael's Church at Heighington, the Reverend Philip Thomas.
Three of the bells at the church were cast in York in 1425 and are still in good tone and pitch.
A further three bells were cast and hung in 1883, and while the bells and oak frame are still in good condition, the fittings need replacing.
The bells also need to be turned to present a new striking surface to the clappers, as existing dents are thinning the bells at impact points.
The clappers, bearings, headstocks and pulleys also need replacing with major restoration work required on the frame and wheels.
