A FUNERAL service for twin sisters who were murdered in a quiet village will take place next week, police said yesterday.

The badly beaten bodies of Claire Sanderson, 27, and her sister Diane were found in a flat in Camblesforth, near Selby, North Yorkshire, on July 18.

North Yorkshire Police said their funeral would take place at the Holy Trinity Church, in East Cowick, on Tuesday August 17 and would be followed by a private cremation.

Factory worker Claire was the victim of a violent assault, police said.

She was found in the same one-bedroom flat as her sister Diane, who had been beaten and strangled.

The service will be relayed to the public and the press outside via a PA system.

In a brief statement issued by the police, the twins' devastated parents George and Jacqueline Sanderson said: ''We would like to thank all members of the media for their assistance throughout this investigation, and for respecting our feelings.

''This is such a difficult time for us as we try to come to terms with what has happened. We hope you will continue to allow us the time and privacy to grieve for our loss.''

Earlier this week inquests into the girls' deaths were opened and adjourned.

North Yorkshire Police said it was still unaware of the funeral arrangements for pensioners James and Joan Britton who were found dead just hours after the Sandersons were discovered.

Retired railway surveyor Mr Britton, 80, and his 82-year-old wife had been stabbed and assaulted at their large detached home at Strensall, near York.
