RESIDENTS in a deprived community are planning to rid their streets of arson and vandalism next week.
Householders in South Stanley are taking part in a Firebusters day on Tuesday.
They will clear back roads and yards to get rid of abandoned furniture, tyres and white goods, which can be a magnet for arsonists.
It follows the success of a similar event in nearby South Moor in May, in which more than 100 people took part in clean-up.
Volunteers will carry out graffiti removal and a street clean-up from 10am to 3pm.
The council is offering a free service to take away unwanted white goods, and fire officers will be available to carry out home safety checks.
Those taking part will be rewarded with a barbecue and will go into a prize draw for the chance to win one of ten pairs of tickets to see England play the Ukraine at St James' Park, Newcastle.
