VILLAGERS have celebrated the success of a campaign to open a shop.
Residents of Middleton Tyas, near Richmond, North Yorkshire, refused to be beaten when it was announced their village store was to close last year.
Instead of accepting the loss, they raised enough money to create a shop in the village hall, and save a building facing an uncertain future in the process.
Jill McMullon, of the campaign group, said: "This is a very exciting time for Middleton Tyas as this venture is much-needed and an essential part of our village and surrounding area.
"It will also provide an essential lifeline to our more elderly residents."
More than 100 villagers donated at least £25 each towards the £70,000 needed to open the shop.
The store was also given money and help from organisations including the Governent, Richmondshire District Council and The Countryside Agency.
Apart from essentials, the shop will stock dairy products and cheeses, fresh bacon and cooked meat.
Local food such as Brymor ice cream and Lewis and Cooper fruit and nuts will also be sold.
