SWIMMERS are being warned to beware of fast-flowing rivers after a man got into difficulties.
Firefighters were called to Finchale Priory, Brasside, on the outskirts of Durham, late yesterday after reports of a man in trouble in the River Wear.
Two appliances from the city's fire station attended with a boat, which in the event was not needed.
The swimmer had injured an ankle while in a fast-flowing section of water, but managed to reach the bank.
Station manager Peter Hewitson said: "He was out of the water, but we assisted paramedics to get him into the ambulance. It is difficult access up to the picnic area there.
"We would ask people to be aware of the dangers of fast-flowing rivers. Also the body temperature can drop quite quickly because the water is cold."
The man was taken by ambulance to the city's University Hospital of North Durham for treatment.
