England captain David Beckham is to remain the face of mobile phone operator Vodafone for another year, it was announced last night.

The Real Madrid midfielder, whose image has been used by Vodafone for the past two years, will play a significant role in a forthcoming advertising campaign, the company said.

No price was put on the contract, although Beckham has already earned millions from endorsements of products ranging from sportswear to sunglasses.

Vodafone said his image would also be used in games and screensavers on the company's multi-media service Vodafone live.

The contract renewal follows a turbulent few months for the midfielder after he was criticised for his performances at Euro 2004 and was earlier the subject of newspaper allegations that he had an affair with a personal assistant.

The former Manchester United player, who is staying at Slaley Hall Hotel, in Northumberland, ahead of tonight's England friendly against Ukraine, also has deals with haircare product range Brylcreem, Police sunglasses, Pepsi and Marks & Spencer.

Most recently, he signed a three-year agreement with Gillette, which will see him appear in advertising and promotional campaigns around the world.
