POLICE were last night hunting a driver who fled the scene of a road crash in which two people died.

Three cars were involved in a collision in the Great North Road, in Newcastle, at Barras Bridge, just before 2pm yesterday.

Two of the drivers died. The third, a motorist in a Jaguar saloon car, drove off.

One man was trapped in his overturned car for more than two hours before emergency services freed him.

Two men, in their late-twenties and early-thirties, were taken to Newcastle General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A police spokesman said: "Officers are making inquiries to trace the Jaguar and its occupants."

The Great North Road remained closed last night from its junction with the A167 Central Motorway at the Haymarket to the Blue House Roundabout.

It caused traffic chaos for North-East football fans driving to the England-Ukraine friendly match at St James's Park.

Witnesses are asked to call 0191-221 8716.
