A TEENAGE volunteer is to compete in this year's junior Great North Run, to raise funds for a day centre for people with dementia.
Bekki Godfrey, 15, is spending most of her summer holiday entertaining mental health patients at St Hilda's Day Centre for the over-65s, in Parkgate, Darlington.
Bekki is the youngest volunteer at the centre. Since starting last October she has built up a good relationship with centre staff and users.
"I come here five days a week to play games or just sit and talk to them - I really enjoy it," said Bekki, of Bensham Road, Darlington.
She has decided to complete the four-kilometre run in Gateshead and Newcastle in September, to raise funds for supplies at the centre, which is run by Darlington Mind.
Joan Moore, the centre's day services manager, said: "It is unusual, but refreshing to have such a young volunteer. She has so much enthusiasm and is great with everybody."
Anyone wanting to sponsor Bekki can contact the centre on (01325) 284139.
The centre is looking for more volunteers. For details telephone Julie Corner on (01325) 283169.
