A LONG-running dispute between education bosses and a parish council over transporting 20 pupils to school, has taken another turn.

Parish councillors at Wombleton are stepping up their campaign to get a better deal on transport for the village's Ryedale School students.

The council believes its case has been strengthened by the decision to upgrade the transport provision for children living on the outskirts of Kirkbymoorside from one-and- a-half terms a year to the full three terms.

Earlier this year, they won a major victory after appealing against a decision by North Yorkshire County Council education and transport bosses that the children did not qualifying for a school bus because they lived within three miles of the school.

This meant they would have to continue to walk either alongside the busy A170 road at Nawton, or down narrow country lanes to get to Ryedale School.

An appeals committee ruled that transport should be provided, but only from the second half of the autumn term, starting in October, to Easter.

The committee also said it wanted to see paths cleared and widened, trees cut back and warning signs erected.

Councillor Pat Lane, chairman of the parish authority, said that so far, nothing had been done.

"We want the improvements recommended by the committee carried out before the dark nights arrive, and we are renewing our campaign for the children to have year round school transport," he said.
