A DNA workshop will be one of the unusual attractions at this year's Wensleydale Show in Leyburn on Saturday, August 28.

This, plus a fingerprint workshop, will be run by North Yorkshire police who are also setting up a street scene set where actors will demonstrate how anti-social behaviour is dealt with.

The show is again being held on the Bellerby Road site which proved so successful last year.

This year, alongside big entries of cattle and sheep, there is an increased emphasis on horses and especially carriage driving classes. The traditional favourites of horticulture and handicraft classes have also been well supported.

Activities in the main ring include the Lampkin brothers' motor cycling display, Bedale Hounds, Concors D'Elegance and a big display of vintage vehicles. There is also a pet lamb competition, carriage driving competitions, a display of heavy horses and the sheep championship.

Visitors can enter a traditional quoits competition and try their hand at dry-stone walling. The many activities for children include giant Scalectrix model car racing, vintage fair ground attractions, "beat the goalie" and face painting.

There will be more than 100 trade stands, including the Yorkshire Ridings produce market. Reeth Brass Band will play.

This year, visitors can travel to Leyburn from Leeming Bar, Bedale or Redmire via the Wensleydale Railway. Five trains will run each way during the day; for details ring 08454 505474. The station is about a 20-minute walk from the show site.

Entry to the show is from 9am, admission £5(£2.50 for concessions and those under 16). Car parking on site is free.
