A TEENAGER is hoping to make a big noise in the music industry with the release of her first single.

Michelle Deery, 17, has taken advantage of Learning and Skills Council County Durham's Entry to Employment (E2E) programme to compose and release her first compact disc.

E2E, which was launched last August, equips young people with the basic skills necessary for employment and provides a starting point for progression to a Foundation Modern Apprenticeship, other employment-based opportunities or further vocational learning.

Michelle, from Newton Aycliffe, was referred to E2E by Developing Initiatives for Support in the Community (Disc), a charity that provides a range of social care for people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

She won a placement at Darlington-based Circulation Recordings, where she wrote the lyrics and composed the music for her CD. Michelle is also making a video on location in Whitby.

She said: "I didn't have much confidence before getting involved with the E2E programme, but the support I have received has been unbelievable.

"Now I hope to forge a career in the music industry, although I'm not too sure whether I'll become the next Britney Spears."

Val Goodrum, of the Learning and Skills Council County Durham, said: "Michelle is a prime example of what can be achieved by young people through the E2E programme, and we hope to develop the skills of other young people.

John Glasper, project manager for E2E at Disc, said: "Michelle has been a joy to work with and her new-found skills and confidence will be an asset to any potential employer."
