A GROUP of keen artists are showcasing their latest creations in the prestige setting of a World Heritage site.
Durham Art Group members launched their 2004/5 exhibition in the Undercroft Restaurant, at the city's cathedral. It features about 30 pieces, the pick of the recent paintings of 17 artists, who are flattered to have the chance to display their work in such a venue.
Group chairwoman Averil Fuller said the group is grateful to have its work on display for viewing by the thousands of tourists from across the world who visit the cathedral each year.
"I suppose we are the luckiest art group around to have such an opportunity. We display for 52 weeks a year around the Undercroft area, and this is the launch of some of the new work."
The group meets weekly at Belmont Community Centre, near Durham, on Sundays, and attracts members from as far afield as North Yorkshire.
New members are welcome to attend the weekly sessions, which run from noon to 4pm.
The Mayor of Durham, Councillor Mary Hawgood, launched the exhibition at a preview event.
