A CELEBRATION is being held to mark the centenary of an event which changed the face of travel in the North-East.
In 1904, the first electric trains were introduced on Tyneside, developed by Newcastle firm Merz and McLellan.
The trains were extended to South Shields and Sunderland, and the whole system eventually became part of the Tyne and Wear Metro system.
Events are being held on Bank Holiday Monday, August 30, at Stephenson Railway Museum, in North Shields, and Tynemouth Station, North Tyneside.
Metro operator Nexus is repainting a Metro car in the red and ivory livery carried by the original electric trains of 1904.
It will carry the Mayor of Newcastle and other guests from St James' Park Station to Tynemouth, followed by an event to mark the start of the celebrations.
