A HOUSE that is being converted into a children's home could be prevented from being used until planning permission has been granted.

Castlebeck Care (Teesdale) Limited is converting a house in Dene Grove, Darlington, to a care home for 12 to 17-year- olds.

But Darlington Borough Council has said that no change of use application has been submitted.

The council warns that if the site was used before the planning issues were clarified, it might seek an injunction preventing the use of the site until the issues are resolved.

Both the council and Castlebeck Care are remaining silent until after the matter is discussed in camera at the council's planning applications committee tomorrow.

A spokesman for the council said: "As this is a matter which is not being discussed in public, we cannot say anything at this time."

A spokesman for Castlebeck Care said: "We would prefer to wait until the matter is discussed on Wednesday before we say anything."

Youngs Foundation, a Castlebeck group company, spent £400,000 acquiring the home, which is costing £100,000 to renovate.

It will not be used for youngsters with alcohol or drug problems, but for those with mental health problems, autistic disorders and behavioural problems.

It is intended the home will provide a family environment for five young people at a time, who will stay for an average of six months.

During their stay the young people would be looked after 24 hours a day by trained nurses, teachers and social workers.
