A teacher from the North-East has died in a jet-ski accident while on holiday in the island paradise of Fiji.

Gillian Neesham, 51, died last Sunday during a holiday with her husband Alistair.

Last night the Foreign Office confirmed that local police were investigating the death, but were not treating it as suspicious. Mrs Neesham, from Hexham, had taught at Prudhoe West First School for more than 10 years.

Her eldest son, Timothy, 20, had returned home from a gap year in Australia just days after his parents left for Fiji in July.

Yesterday he was too upset to speak to reporters from the family home in Leazes Park.

According to local media reports, Mrs Neesham and her family had checked into the Sonaisali Island Resort.

They had gone jet-skiing on Sunday afternoon with a local guide when the accident happened.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that a British national did die in a jet-ski accident on August 22 and the next of kin have been informed. Our understanding is that the death is being treated as an accident."
