A woman had a "remarkable" escape after a bus shelter she was standing in was demolished by a car in County Durham today, police said.

The 26-year-old was waiting outside the Sandhole Working Men's Cub, in Gray Terrace, New Kyo, near Stanley, this morning when a driver lost control of his car and crashed into the shelter.

The roof of the shelter fell onto the woman and she suffered a broken ankle and minor head wound. She was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham.

A Durham Police spokesman said: "Officers who attended said the woman had a remarkable escape considering what had happened."

The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, and his female passenger were unhurt.

The spokesman said police investigating the cause of the crash would interview the driver.

The road was closed while the scene was cleared.
