THE NORTH-EAST'S top under-15 sprinter, Yusuf Aliu, was in record-breaking form in Saturday's Tartan Games at Gateshead International Stadium.

The Middlesbrough-Mandale Harrier, who recently added the AAA crown to his Northern and North-East titles, clocked 11.41 secs in the 100m, beating the two-year-old record by almost one-tenth of a second.

Aliu, who set two new records when he achieved a sprint double in the North-East Championships on the same track in May, beat runner up Anthony Hall by almost half a second. But the Jarrow and Hebburn runner went on to win the 200 metres in 24.20.

Middlesbrough-Mandale's young sprinters had a field day in the region's last open meeting of the season, with Ben Wilson winning the under-17 100m in 11.40 secs and John Bains completing a double, winning the 100m in 11.15 secs before recording a record-breaking 23.0 secs in the 200m.

In the women's events Titi Ameobi (Gateshead), sister of Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi, completed a senior sprint double, winning the 100m and 200m.

Northern and North-East senior champion Stacey Mohammed (Jarrow and Hebburn) set a new record of 38.54m in the discus, an improvement of 66 centimetres.

Former Gateshead Harrier Mark Christie, who now competed in the British Athletics League for Sale, continued his return after injury, winning the senior pole vault with a clearance of 4.75m. Christie, who was the UK's top-ranked junior last year with a clearance of 5.11m, was 25 centimetres off the meeting record.

Former Northern discus champion Ian Burns, of the host club, won the senior event with a thorw of 61.81m, nearly two metres short of his own record.

Birtley's Rebecca Pottinger won the under-15 girls high jump with a record-breaking leap of 1.61m, an improvement of four centimetres.
