JESSOPS has unveiled a new weapon in the battle to remain a major force in the digitally-driven photographic industry.

The photographic retailer has started a joint venture with Pixology, a supplier of digital photography software and networks, to offer customers photo printing services direct from their mobile phones.

The deal allows customers to order prints direct from their mobile phone from Jessops without using a website, kiosk or consumer terminal.

Jessops is the first European retailer to offer the service which is an initiative it hopes will put it at the forefront of the £2.7bn UK photo imaging market.

The photo industry has gone through enormous change in recent years as digital technology has replaced more traditional sales of films and developing and printing services.

The UK development and printing market is estimated by analysts Mintel to be worth morethan £600m per year.

Jessops has a four per cent share of that market.

Derek Hine, Jessops chief executive, said: "This is just another example of our constant aim to be at the forefront of innovative technology and reinforces our strategy to continue to be a major player in the rapidly growing digital camera market."
