ONLY 24-hours after an 8-4 win in the Newcastle Vipers' season opener against the Fife Flyers, the Tyneside outfit saw the scoreline reversed against the Edinburgh Capitals.
Newcastle took the lead through defenceman-turned-forward Steve Gallace on 2.16, with an unassisted effort.
However, the Capitals replied with four goals before the first break, Dino Bauba, and Martin Cingel netting before Marty Johnston bagged a pair of markers for Edinburgh.
Two more goals for the Capitals after the break added further misery to the Vipers' night, Rastislav Bohme and Johnston making it 6-1 with little more than half an hour played.
Matt Beveridge shortly pulled one back, assisted by Jonathan Weaver on 35.12, but Bauba once again struck on 38.04 to make it 7-2 going into the final period.
Whatever spirit Newcastle brought into the final period to grab two goals from Weaver and Gallace, it wasn't enough and Cingel scored his second on 54.46 to round off the evening at 8-4.
