Police are searching for a van driver who may hold vital clues to an alleged sex attack on a young boy more than 20 years ago.

Officers have launched an investigation into an allegation of sexual assault involving a seven-year-old boy back in 1983 at Bartrams Bay, in the Hendon area of Sunderland - which has only just been reported to police.

After the assault, the victim, who was naked from the waist down and very distressed, ran through the dockyard.

He was picked up by a van driver who took him to his home nearby, but then left the scene without leaving his details.

Police are now seeking to trace this man, who they believe may have vital information about the alleged incident.

This witness was described as being white, aged 35-40 and of medium build. He had short blond hair with a moustache and was wearing a white T-shirt, jeans and steel toe-capped boots.

He was driving a blue Bedford van.

Detective Inspector John Stafford from Sunderland CID, said: "This is highly unusual in that we are dealing with the report of a crime which happened around 20 years ago.

"However, we are treating this complaint seriously and would urge anyone with information to get in touch."

Anyone who knows the driver or can recall the incident is asked to contact DC Chris Carson at Gillbridge Avenue Police Station on (0191) 4547555 ext 66158.
