FLOWER power in Thirsk has paid off.
The volunteer working party was cock-a-hoop on Tuesday when the town was named Yorkshire In Bloom winner.
Thirsk received a score of 359 out of a possible 400 - 14 points ahead of its nearest rivals. The average score from combined spring and summer judging, was a 22-point improvement on last year.
The town has scaled to the top from its lowly position of 12th out of 13 in 2001, and has now been invited to be a national entrant in next year's prestigious Britain in Bloom contest.
Key player Coun Carole Pack said: "This is a truly tremendous result for the whole community of Thirsk, and I thank everybody for the support we have received over the last few years.
Spokesman Tony Jordan added: "We are a team of volunteers who share a passion for improving where we live through the aesthetic value of flowers.
"Every one of our volunteers will be so proud of this award and the recognition that it brings for what we have achieved together as a community group."
The Black Swan pub at Norby took second place out of 34 entries seeking award in the public houses and restaurants category.
The efforts of landlords, David and Jennifer Bramley, contributed to Thirsk's win with their beautiful floral decorations.
Sue Dodds and Kath Reynard are the backbone of the town's in bloom group, and co-ordinate the volunteer effort. They are supported by a hardworking gang and several local sponsors in the town.
