SIR William Turner's Almshouses, at Kirkleatham, has opened its exercise classes to the public.
The groups are limited to 15 participants at each session and, following the summer holidays, there are vacancies in both the tai chi and yoga groups.
"We have always welcomed friends and relatives of our residents and now we have the opportunity to open the groups to the general public," said Jean Clubley, secretary of the residents' association at the almshouses.
"It is a great excuse to get out of the house for a little gentle exercise and we always enjoy a sociable half-hour over tea and biscuits at the end of each session."
The exercises cater for people at all levels of mobility, including those who prefer to remain seated.
"People who keep themselves active are more likely to maintain their personal independence," said Sheila Simpson, resident warden at the almshouses, where the average age of residents is 78.
The groups meet for yoga on Tuesdays and tai chi on Fridays from 2-3pm in the newly-built community room.
Admission is £1.50 including refreshments.
