AN Army major has battled appalling weather conditions to come fourth in the Armed Forces Parachute Championships.
Major Paul Hallett, from Northallerton, was part of a team from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers competing in the intermediate category at the event, held at Netheravon Camp, in Wiltshire.
In total, 43 four-way sky diving teams from the armed forces took part. All the competitors struggled with unpredictable winds, heavy rain and poor visibility, and the event had to be halted a number of times to let the conditions improve.
Major Hallett started parachuting in 1993 after being introduced to the sport through an army adventure training course while at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.
He said: "The Army are great at supporting my sports pursuits by giving me time to compete and train.
"My wife, Sarah, is a great support too, with her love, excellent cooking and giving me time to go away and develop my skydiving skills.
