T'AI chi and yoga classes at the Sir William Turner's Almshouses have started.
The classes are being held in the newly built community room at the almshouses at Kirkleatham, near Redcar.
The lessons are suitable for people with a range of mobility, including those who wish to remain seated.
Jean Clubley, secretary of the residents' association at the almshouses, where the average age of people is 78, said: "It is a great excuse to get out of the house for a little gentle exercise and we always enjoy a sociable half hour over tea and biscuits at the end of each session."
Residents' warden Sheila Simpso said: "People who keep themselves active are more likely to maintain personal independence."
The yoga and t'ai chi classes, funded by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's Single Regeneration Budget for West Redcar, cost £1.50, including refreshments.
Yoga is held on Tuesdays, from 2pm to 3pm, and t'ai chi is on Fridays, from 2pm to 3pm.
