Phil Jaques made up for lost time by hitting the boundary trail when Yorkshire's Championship match against Somerset at Taunton finally got started at 5pm yesterday with only 16 overs of the day remaining.

Periods of rain on a saturated ground eventually gave way to bright sunshine and Jaques showed no signs of rustiness as he opened with fellow left-hander, Joe Sayers, after Yorkshire had been put in to bat.

The Australian survived a confident shout for lbw off Andy Caddick's first ball of the match but two deliveries later he found the boundary with a straight drive and Sayers also got moving with a four which came when he steered Richard Johnson to third man.

Johnson generally bowled a tight line but Caddick continued to be punished by Jaques who square drove and cut fours in one over from the former England paceman before twice cutting him to the fence.

All but four of the first 32 runs in seven overs came from boundaries with each of Jaques' six fours being taken off Caddick who was withdrawn from the attack after four overs and replaced by Simon Francis.

Although the scoring slowed down, Jaques still monopolised events until Sayers moved into double figures by straight driving Francis for four and the 50 was raised when Jaques edged Johnson for the first of two consecutive boundaries to third man.

Ian Blackwell replaced Johnson for the final over of the day, Jaques helping himself to a single off the last ball to finish on 48 out of 60 without loss.

Yorkshire omitted paceman, John Blain, and gave a first team debut to 20-year-old left-arm spinner and left hand bat, David Wainwright, from Pontefract.
