A thanksgiving service is planned for an inspirational headteacher who has died from cancer.
Parents and governors at Willington Primary School are organising the tribute to Maggie Griffiths in the Methodist Church on September 22, from 9.30am.
Originally a medical researcher, Mrs Griffiths moved to the North-East from London with her husband, Ian, a doctor, in 1978, starting teacher training at Newcastle University in 1985.
Mr Griffiths said: "She came from a strong teaching tradition and it was what she always wanted to do.
"I think because she came to it quite late, she never lost her enthusiasm for it.
"Even when she found out she had cancer she carried on teaching and only finished last term.
"She felt very strongly that children, both boys and girls, should be given every opportunity to maximise their potential.
"Anything that stood in the way of that, whether it was physical, emotional or financial she would be their stern opponent. But she also felt that kids should work hard as well."
The couple who were married for 30 years, have three adult children, two sons and a daughter.
Brian Myers, chairman of governors at Willington, said: "I was privileged to have known and worked closely with Maggie Griffiths for the last eight years. Beneath what some may term a rather stern exterior she had a terrific sense of humour and a heart of gold.
"The dedication she showed to this work required a very special talent, a great deal of patience and tolerance and an in depth understanding of children's needs. Maggie had all of these."
