ONE of the region's oldest schools is undergoing a facelift as part of a £6m renovation and building project.
The Royal Grammar School in Newcastle, founded in 1545, has appointed Bowey Construction to carry out the work, which includes the refurbishment of the kitchen and dining facilities and the construction of a junior school.
Work on the dining room refurbishment was completed last week, but construction of the new school, which will see the demolition and removal of maintenance outbuildings to make way for the new building set to house year three pupils, is still being negotiated.
The construction plans at the independent school, one of the oldest in the city, form part of moves to make the school fully co-educational by 2006.
