GRAEME SOUNESS has taken the first step towards solving Newcastle United's defensive crisis after lining up Norwegian Ronny Johnsen.
Johnsen is a free agent having been released by Aston Villa and is allowed to make the move even though the transfer window is now closed.
Souness is convinced the former Manchester United centre-back is exactly what the Magpies need as they attempt to fill the gap vacated by Jonathan Woodgate's departure to Real Madrid.
Johnsen would initially arrive on a six-month deal, with a view to extending the contract should the situation suit both parties.
Souness has turned to the 35-year-old, who has 61 caps for Norway, knowing that he is unable to spend any money until the transfer window reopens again in January.
"We're talking to Ronny Johnsen," said Souness. "He made 32 starts last year and he's the best option open to us at this time. He has vast experience.
"He would deal with playing at a venue like St James' and there's not many players who are used to that. He's been training, but not match fit."
