A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl was left fighting for her life after drinking cleaning fluid as her parents celebrated their honeymoon in Greece, it was revealed yesterday.

Kennedy Robinson fell into a coma after drinking the alkaline-based substance from an unmarked pop bottle left behind a hotel bar in the popular resort of Kefalonia.

She was flown to a hospital in Athens, 300 miles away, in a Greek Army plane.

Kennedy remained on a life support machine for three days before she recovered sufficiently to be flown home.

The youngster was with her parents, Kylee and Denver Robinson, of Meldrum Square, Stockton, as they celebrated their honeymoon in Avithos Resort, in Svoronata, Kefalonia.

Mrs Robinson said yesterday: "It was so awful. We know we were close to losing her."

The 26-year-old said: "The barman was playing games with the kids and the bar wasn't closed off and he got a stool for them to sit on.

"Kennedy saw the spirit bottle, which had clear liquid in it, and drank it. She started throwing up straight away. Her eyes were rolling but she wasn't really aware of what was going on - she was out of it."

Mrs Robinson added: "After being flown home, she went to the University Hospital of North Tees, in Stockton, but was transfered to Newcastle so that doctors there can use cameras to judge the extent of the damage to her stomach."

Kennedy remained on a drip more than four weeks after the incident and doctors believe she may need surgery to enable her to eat unaided again.

A Libra Holidays spokeswoman said: "We understand our staff and those of the Avithos Resort, in Svoronata, Kefalonia, assisted in obtaining the best possible medical treatment for Kennedy, and she was ultimately air-lifted to Athens. Our thoughts were with the family throughout this difficult time"
