WHEN 17-year-old Cynthia Le Neveu fell in love with an Egyptian ship's captain while at sea her parents said the relationship would never last.
But today the couple are as happy as the day they first met and celebrating their golden wedding anniversary with her family in Darlington.
Now 70, she married Monem El Eyouni 50 years ago and through his work ended up travelling the world before settling in Egypt to have three children and nine grandchildren.
The pair have jetted into the region to spend time with her brother Geoff Le Neveu and his wife Tonie at their home in Teal Road, Darlington.
Mrs El Eyouni, who is very involved with the British Embassy charity work in their home town of Alexandria and speaks fluent Arabic, said: "We have been all over the world together - I have had a good, happy life."
Mr El Eyouni said: "She is a very sincere and loving wife and a wonderful mother."
