AN MP is calling on people who stand up to bullies, thugs and vandals to come forward.

Dari Taylor, MP for Stockton South, is backing the Taking A Stand Awards, which recognise people who have made an effort to tackle anti-social behaviour.

In Thornaby, part of Mrs Taylor's constituency, father-of-three Paul Wardell killed himself after becoming depressed about the behaviour of thugs he had tried to stand up to. Now, Mrs Taylor is hoping people dealing with anti-social behaviour will come forward to be given support.

She said: "The anti-social behaviour of a minority of vandals, thugs and nuisance neighbours can ruin neighbour- hoods and destroy people's quality of life. The Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003, with measures such as the closure of crack houses and dispersal of intimidating groups, sends out a strong message that anti-social behaviour will be tackled and not tolerated.

"It takes bravery and determination to stand up to yobs.

"We want to reward those people who are saying enough is enough.

"The stories of last year's Taking A Stand award winners are an inspiration to others and I would like to see as many nominations as possible for this year's awards coming from Stockton South."
