Darlington Arts Centre has been given permission to show films that do not have a current rating from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

It was given approval by the licensing committee of Darlington Borough Council yesterday.

It will show The Comedians, starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, advertising it with a 12a certificate.

It was released in 1970 with the AA classification, meaning cinema-goers had to be 14 to see it.

The BBFC said there was not an equivalent certification today.

The centre will also show a documentary called Belonging, about a girl returning to Cambodia 26 years after being airlifted out as a baby and adopted.

The film has never been given a cinema classification but will be advertised with 12A certificate.

Conditions attached to the centre's cinematograph licence mean they can only show films with a current BBFC classification unless they have got permission the council.
