ALAN Milburn and John Reid pushed the case for a directly-elected regional assembly in the North-East during a visit to the region yesterday.
Mr Milburn, the former Health Secretary, was in his Darlington constituency with his successor in support of the Yes4theNorthEast campaign.
The pair chatted with shoppers and handed out leaflets outlining the benefits of an elected assembly.
They were joined by the Labour leader of Darlington Borough Council, Councillor John Williams, and the Mayor, Councillor Roderick Francis.
Mr Milburn, making his first public appearance in the town since he was appointed Labour's election and policy chief, said: "I think the North-East needs its own voice and needs a stronger voice."
Dr Reid said: "We have it already in Scotland and I think North-East people should have exactly the same."
