THE French company which owns a disused County Durham cement works has weighed in with a grant to help a primary school's pupils improve their fitness.
Lafarge has given £4,500 to the Friends of St John's Chapel School, in Weardale, from the community fund it set up after it closed the former Blue Circle works at Eastgate two years ago.
But another £3,000 is needed for the school to create a fitness trail around the school field.
The friends, mainly pupils' parents, hope to raise part of the money at a sports auction and concert by the Happy Cats folk and dance music group at St John's Chapel Town Hall on Friday, at 8pm.
Items for auction include a signed photograph by Ian Botham, an autographed Durham County Cricket Club bat, a charity cricket shirt worn by Zak Dingle of TV soap Emmerdale and signed Sunderland and Middlesborough footballs and shirts.
Tickets costing £5 for the night are available at local shops or at the school.
