Billingham Town sampled the magic of the FA Cup on a day of high drama against Ossett Town on Saturday.

Town defeated the UniBond League club after they lost four players through injury, scored one of the fastest FA Cup goals of the season, had keeper Darren Collier red-carded before seeing their emergency keeper become the hero.

Town manager Alan Robinson said: "The game had everything, but I must admit that we carried a little bit of luck, but we couldn't have been more unlucky in terms of injuries. It is what the FA Cup is all about."

Craig Bishop was injured in the warm up, and Ossett agreed he could be replaced.

Town went ahead after 17 seconds when Carl Chillingsworth headed home a Stuart Brightwell corner, but in the space of 20 minutes, Jason Ainsley, Lee Ure and Lee Fitzgerald all went off injured, using up Town's substitutes.

They still missed chances to increase their lead, but at the start of the second-half goalkeeper Collier misjudged the bounce of a through ball, handled outside his area and was dismissed.

Midfielder Michael Canavan went in goal, and pulled off two excellent saves to help Town into the next round.

Dunston had the best win of the day, with a 6-1 victory at Flixton from the North West Counties League. They took the lead through David Southern after ten minutes, Flixton levelling before the break.

But Dunston scored five times in the second half, through Graham Armstrong (2), Danny Shore, Southern and Steve Pickering.

Whitby Town progress after beating Billingham Synthonia 3-1 at Central Avenue.

Synners took the lead when David Wells cut in from the right and his shot was deflected past Whitby keeper Ben Escritt, but Whitby levelled when Anthony Ormerod scored at the second attempt.

Synners had the chances to regain the lead, but were stunned when the referee awarded a penalty for handball against Christian Hanson, and Craig Veart scored from the spot. Steve Johnson headed a late third.

Shildon, who beat two UniBond clubs last season, were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Woodley Sports and must now replay in Stockport tomorrow.

They took the lead with a strike by Steve Huggins from a Danny Key free kick, but failed to press home their advantage and Woodley levelled after 75 minutes when Key's headed clearance rebounded off Damien Morrison into the net.

Spennymoor face a tricky replay at Fleetwood after being held to a 1-1 draw at the Brewery Field.

The North West Counties side took the lead when a shot by Alex Porter beat Darren Horrigan, but Moors levelled through Danny Brunskill from the penalty spot just before half time when his shot was handled on the line by Phil Robinson, who was red-carded.

Moors had virtually all of the play in the second-half, but didn't give the Fleetwood keeper much to do.

Horden are also travelling in midweek for a replay, because they have to go to Warrington after a 1-1 draw.

Horden dominated the opening stages, but couldn't score. They missed several good chances, and Andy McKenna also had a penalty saved.

Warrington took the lead through Chris Moores, but Horden equalised when James Huntley ran through and beat the Warrington keeper.

Crook Town's hopes of progressing were dashed by a second-half fightback by Glasshoughton, who won 3-1 at the Millfield.

Crook led thanks to a header by Jamie Harwood, but Glasshoughton levelled early in the second half, and then scored twice in the last seven minutes. In between the last two goals, Crook striker Danny Mellanby was dismissed for his second yellow card.

In the all Northern League games, Esh Winning won 2-1 at Thornaby. Esh took the lead when Stephen Burns' shot was blocked and fell for Gary Messer to head his eighth goal of the season. They went further ahead when Burns dribbled in from the right, beat two men and fired into the bottom corner.

West Auckland lost 2-0 at home to Ashington. Darren Timmons scored from an early corner to put Ashington into the lead, then West keeper Jonathan Collinson pushed a shot from Gary Caldow against the bar.

Ashington keeper Paul Simpson saved a Brian Fairhurst penalty, and in Ashington got a second when Caldow scored from an Alex Lawson corner.

One of the biggest surprises of the day was Blyth's 2-0 home defeat by Skelmersdale from the North West Counties League. Blyth had Steve Preen dismissed late in the game.

Whitley Bay lost 3-1 at Brigg Town, Neil Shotton scoring to make the score 1-1 at one stage.

Brandon lost 4-1 at home to Liversedge, who were two up inside the first ten minutes. Sean Gregory scored for Brandon when they were already 3-0 down just before half time. Whickham were beaten 3-0 at Atherton LR.

The draw for the next round will be made at lunchtime today.
