A NORTH-EAST woman's mission to help women leprosy victims in India has inspired music lovers to organise a special fundraising concert.

Leah Pattison, from Frosterley, County Durham, relies on money sent from her home region to support her work in the slums of Nagpur, where she is setting up a clinic for women and children.

Rotary clubs have raised thousands of pounds for her charity, Start, which she runs with colleague Usha Patil.

The concert, which is being staged at Durham's Gala Theatre on Saturday, October 2, is backed by Durham Bede Club.

Called With a Song in My Heart, it is being organised by Freda Billson, from Bishop Auckland, and will feature soprano Marilyn Hill-Smith and mezzo-soprano Alison Hudson, accompanied by pianist Simon Kenworth, musical director of Scarborough's Spa orchestra.

The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets, which cost £10, can be obtained on 0191-332 4041.
