MONEY has been made available to develop a remembrance garden in a Ferryhill cemetery.
Ferryhill Town Council has obtained a grant of £56,000 from the Countryside Agency Aggregates Tax Levy Grant Fund via Lafarge Aggregates.
The funds will be used to develop a quiet area in Duncombe Cemetery.
The work will include a high wall, water feature, seating and planting, and space for remembrance plaques for those who have been cremated.
Jamie Corrigan, the council's executive officer, said: "Currently, there is nowhere in the cemetery where visitors are guaranteed a quiet location in which to sit, due to the activity at the nearby Lafarge Quarry. It is for this reason that the council has been successful in its grant application."
A steering group will help Ferryhill Town Council and Groundwork East Durham with the final design.
Council leader Councillor Bernie Lamb said: "This is brilliant news and builds on our previous successes in obtaining grants."
