VODAFONE began its push into the market for third-generation mobile phones yesterday by announcing plans to launch ten handsets before Christmas.

The group, which is based in Newbury, Berkshire, said it would begin selling the phones in November in a move that intensifies competition with rival telecoms companies.

The handsets will feature the latest technology offering users improved quality, sound, pictures and video, as well as access to 3G games.

Models due to go on sale include the first two megapixel camera phone in Europe, which can take pictures at a higher resolution than those already on the market. No details were given on the prices of the handsets, which have been developed in partnership with manufacturers including Ericsson, Nokia and Motorola.
