TEAMS from Sedgefield borough starred in a sports tournament designed to give a wide range of young people the chance to take part in high-level competition.

With three firsts in basketball, athletics and girl's football, a second place in mini-hockey and a third in netball, the youngsters showed their skills at the Durham Youth Games, held at the Graham Sport Centre, in Maiden Castle, near Durham.

The games are held annually to celebrate the achievements of 1,000 children who represent their school at sport but have not reached county level.

Gary Cooper, of Sedgefield Borough Council and Team Sedgefield representative, said: "It is so important to participate in sport on a regular basis and we would encourage everyone to get involved."

A wide range of sporting activities take place at the borough's four leisure centres. For details call Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre on (01325) 300800, Spennymoor on (01388) 815827, Ferryhill on (01740) 654123 or Shildon-Sunnydale (01388) 777340.
