PIPE-fitter Kenneth Bottom twice had to be resuscitated by the emergency services after he crashed his Porsche into a tree after a party, a court heard yesterday.

Harrogate magistrates heard how Bottom, 44, broke his neck and back when his sports car veered off the road, overturned and hit a tree on the evening of May 23.

Caroline Midgley, prosecuting, said the Porsche had been seen in Leeming Lane at Langthorpe, near Boroughbridge, weaving about the road at a fast speed.

Bottom, of Market Hill, Boroughbridge, pleaded guilty to drink-driving, and admitted having neither insurance nor test certificate.

His solicitor, Geoffrey Rogers, said Bottom could remember nothing of the accident or the day it happened.

He had been told by his son that he had drunk before he went home. The previous night he had been to a party and had drunk heavily into the early hours.

Bottom had been preparing himself a meal when for some reason he decided to go for a drive, even though his car was of the road waiting for repairs.

Bottom, who had a previous drink-drive conviction, was banned for three years and fined £250 with £55 costs.
