AN electronic safety device has been installed outside a primary school to help slow down traffic.
The Road Safety Speed Indication Device - nicknamed Smiley Sid - shows drivers how fast they are travelling, displaying a smiley face if a driver's speed is within the speed limit and a downcast look if otherwise.
About a year ago it was stolen from the lamppost it was mounted on in Eston, Middlesbrough.
It is thought that the culprits mistakenly thought they had been caught speeding on camera and made off with the evidence.
But now the council has a new sign and its first port of call is outside New Marske Primary School, in Birkdale Road, New Marske where ten-year-old Charlotte Mett won an in-school competition to design the front cover of a leaflet about speeding.
The device is to move to a series of locations where residents and councillors have complained about excessive speed. This will include the A174 Whitby Road at Easington, from October 18.
