A DAUGHTER has paid tribute to her mother who died this week, after recently celebrating her 100th birthday.
Olive Paine was born in Skeeby in 1904 and lived all her life in North Yorkshire.
Her daughter, Iris Peacock, believes she met husband Harold, who served in the Royal Signals, at a dance in Richmond Town Hall.
The couple raised two other children, Joe and Delia, and had seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren
Mrs Peacock, 67, of Conan Drive, Richmond, said her mother had lived through a lot.
"She could remember before there was a road from Skeeby to Darlington having to walk to Gilling to catch the bus," Mrs Peacock said.
During World War Two, Mrs Paine spent two weeks at the time of the Dunkirk invasion not knowing if her husband was alive.
After he retired, the couple moved from Catterick Garrison to Hipswell.
Mrs Peacock said: "She was a very good mother and was as bright as a button until only a few months ago.
"She will be greatly missed."
Two weeks ago, Mrs Paine celebrated her 100th birthday with her family at Brentwood Lodge, in Leyburn, where she had lived for the past ten years.
As well as a telegram from the Queen, she received a letter from Richmondshire MP William Hague and a bouquet of flowers from county councillor Murray Naylor.
Mrs Paine will be received into St Joseph and St Francis Xavier Church in Richmond on Monday at 5pm. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday at 2pm.
