GOLDEN girl Kelly Holmes is in the region today to run her last race of the season before putting 49,000 people under starters orders for the Great North Run.
The double Olympic winner, right, is taking part in the Great North Mile today. She has won the event twice, but was beaten into second place last year in front of a crowd of 20,000, and is keen to win back her title.
Tomorrow, the 34-year-old will be joined in Newcastle by four-times gold medal winner Matthew Pinsent.
The pair will be driven through the thousands of runners and spectators in an open-topped vehicle. Kelly will officially start the race, while Matthew Pinsent will be taking part.
Yesterday, Kelly was at Gateshead Quays, where she met North-East youngsters.
