A TOWN has gold in its sights for next year's Britain in Bloom awards after winning a silver medal in the competition this week.

Saltburn, east Cleveland, won the medal in the small coastal resort category at the Northumbria in Bloom award ceremony, in the Royal Armouries at Leeds. Last year, the town won the bronze award in the same section.

Earlier this month, the town celebrated winning Northumbria In Bloom's Best Coastal Resort category at a presentation ceremony in Hardwick Hall, Sedgefield, County Durham.

Councillor Madge Moses, Mayor of of Redcar and Cleveland, who accepted the awards at both ceremonies, said: "It was brilliant. I'm really pleased. Next year, we're going for gold.

"I want to congratulate everyone involved - our council, Saltburn, Marske and New Marske Parish Council, all the community, particularly Saltburn In Bloom and the businesses. It was a real partnership success."

The category's gold medal was won by St Ives, Cornwall, with Saltburn's two other rivals, North Berwick, on the Borders and Ramsey, on the Isle of Man, also receiving silvers.
